Welcome to Benton Harbor Charter School’s 2019/2020 School Year!

There is a certain excitement about the beginning of school. For those of us fortunate to call ourselves educators, it is the beginning of a new year and a time to continue what was meaningful in our classrooms, to put aside what didn’t work, to engage with our students in fresh ways.

We have reflected on the successes of the last year; we have acknowledged our strengths; we are determined to build on past experience to bring it into the present day of our classrooms. That is the gift of our profession: the opportunity for renewal; the privilege of making the coming school year as good as it can be.

I was recently reminded of how overwhelming the first week can be so let us all take a deep breath and plunge into the first week with a clear vision.

As an educator and a principal, I must consider the well-being of the people who comprise my educational community. I want them to share my vision of what a good educator can be, as well as the process of what becoming a great educator can be.

I look forward to building our current staff and my goal is to create an educational team that reflects the mission and the vision of the school: a new educational path for students that will lead them toward college and career.

Our enthusiastic office team is registering new families, ordering needed materials and updating student files. Our hard-working and conscientious custodians have spent the entire summer thoroughly cleaning the facility.

If you drove past the school, you may have also noticed a new roof and some exterior painting. We have also been able to add security doors and enhance our science and band rooms. This will add some newness.

We are indeed a passionate and caring community with the common goals of having high academic standards, providing a safe community and building character to prepare kids for active, thoughtful and caring participation in the world around them. We can’t wait for the adventure that is to come this year.

Educationally yours,

 Tim Harris
