In partnership with Whirlpool, students learn about computer science and design thinking

At Benton Harbor Charter School Academy we are learning about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) through our partnership with the Whirlpool Corporation.  Most recently, Whirlpool volunteers brought the goITprogram to our school. All of our middle school students were part of learning the basic concepts of computer science and then moved on to design thinking. They first identified a problem. The problem that the students addressed are the many potholes around the city that are a hindrance to driving. In response, they created an app that locates potholes, so that people can avoid hitting them and creating damage to their [...]

Happy Principal Appreciation Month!

Today we celebrate our principal, Tim Harris, and our assistant principal, Ashley Smith. We are grateful for their leadership and commitment to making Benton Harbor Charter School Academy a safe, tight-knit community.  Mr. Tim Harris is in his nineteenth year as an educator. He is celebrating his thirteenth year at BHCSA. He obtained both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Western Michigan University and is a proud Bronco! Being an educator allows him to empower teachers to be the best that they can be. It also allows him to be a role model and have a positive impact on a [...]

What is Count Day?

You may hear someone say, “make sure your child is here for count day on Wednesday, October 2!” But what does that really mean? What makes count day more important than any other day? The simple answer is that count day is mandated through the State School Aid Act. It was initiated in 1979 as a way to give fair and accurate funding to public schools. Budgets are created and approved based on the number of students who are in attendance at the school on that day. Budget dollars translate into providing the best educational experience possible for your child. Having [...]

Welcome to the 2019/2020 School Year

Welcome! There is a certain excitement about the beginning of school. For those of us fortunate to call ourselves educators, it is the beginning of a new year and a time to continue what was meaningful in our classrooms, to put aside what didn’t work, to engage with our students in fresh ways. We have reflected on the successes of the last year; we have acknowledged our strengths; we are determined to build on past experience to bring it into the present day of our classrooms. That is the gift of our profession: the opportunity for renewal; the privilege of [...]

Overcoming At-Risk Situations, a note from principal Tim Harris

Tim Harris, principal at Benton Harbor Charter School Academy, is an inspirational leader and understands the culture and community of his school. He reminds the staff about what being part of the Benton Harbor Charter School family is all about and why their work is so crucial and valued.  In his own words, he writes about the true story of poverty, diversity, and restrictiveness in the classroom. “…Because I’m an educator, the inevitable failures (of our students) belong to me,” claimed principal Tim Harris as he explained the understanding of children in poverty to his colleagues. “However, we all know [...]
